Chapter 4: Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
Descriptive Statistics
Describe the data in the study.
Frequencies
Used to describe how often something occurs.
Frequency Distribution
The count indicates how often something occurs within a given interval.
Histogram
a bar graph where the vertical (y) axis identifies the frequency a score occurs and the horizontal (x) axis presents the score value.
Mean
Is the average of the distribution; balancing scores above and below it.
Measures of Central Tendency
Location of the center of a distribution, common measures being mode, mean, and median.
Median
It is the value if the score exactly in the middle of the distribution.
Mode
Score value that occurs most frequently in a distribution.
Normal Distribution
The data points are distributed in a symmetrical, bell-shaped curve.
Range
One measure of variability that indicates the lowest and highest scores.
Skewed Distribution
There is a lack of symmetry in the score spread.
Standard Deviation
A common measure of variability where the expression of the amount of spread in the frequency distribution and the average amt of deviation in which each individual score varies from the mean.
Standard Error of the Mean (SEM)
An estimate of the standard deviations of multiple samples.
Variability
Spread of scores in a distribution.
M, x
Mean of a sample
