Chapter 4 - cns, pns & neurons: structure & function Flashcards
CNS
Is made up of the Brain Spinal cord Forebrain - cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus, limbic system Midbrain Hindbrain
PNS: subdivisions
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
What are the two branches of the somatic and the autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic nervous system
Parasympathetic nervous system
The central nervous system
The CNS comprises the brain and the spinal cord. The spinal cord runs from the base of the brain (brain stem), inside the bones of the spine to the lower middle section of the spine.
Function of the CNS
Enables the brain to communicate with the rest of the body by conveying messages from the brain to the PNS, and from the PNS to the brain
Spinal cord
It’s segmented, with the upper section responsible for communication between the brain and the upper parts of the body. The lower section of the spinal cord is responsible for the power parts of the body such as legs, toes and feet
