Chapter 4 - Clouds and Fogs Flashcards
What are the types of clouds?
High clouds
- Cirrocumulus (Cotton balls)
- Cirrus (Hair like)
- Cirrostratus (Halo around sun)
- Cirrostratus (Haze like clouds)
Middle clouds
- Altocumulus (Big cotton balls)
- Altostratus (Grey patch clouds)
- Lenticular (Whitish grey patch clouds)
- Cumulonimbus (Thunderstorm clouds - very tall)
Low clouds
- Nimbostratus (Big fluffy grey clouds)
- Stratus (Low fluffy grey clouds)
- Stratocumulus (Greyish white cotton clouds)
- Cumulus [Fair weather] (Regular fluffy clouds)
What is another name for Cumulonimbus?
Anvil head cloud
What is the development of Cumulonimbus?
The gust takes up the hot air since hot air has less density or air pressure
Once the air and vapor reaches the top, it then forms the vapor into ice crystals; providing more density and more air pressure
The vapor then goes down and releases the water to the Earth’s surface, cooling the air
What is fog?
Clouds that touched the Earth’s surface
What type of fogs are there?
Radiation fog (when all solar energy exits the earth and allows the temperature to meet up with the dew point)
Advection fog (Warmer moist air that moves to cooler grounds)
Evaporation Fog (When heated moister evaporates from a body source of water)
Valley Fog
