Chapter 4 - Atmospheric Lifting Mechanism, Cold Front, and Warm Front Flashcards
1
Q
What are the atmospheric lifting mechanisms?
A
orographic lifting (air is lifted over an obstacle)
frontal lifting (a cold air mass pushes a warmer one upward)
convergence (two air masses collide and air in between is forced upward)
convective lifting (air heats up and rises over hot spots)
2
Q
How do cold fronts move?
A
The cold air moves into warm surfaces winds. This cause the warm air to be lifted.
(Basically active cold air masses moves towards warm air masses)
3
Q
How do warm fronts move?
A
Warm air masses (stable conditions) get gentle lifting by passive cool air masses, slowly raising over the cool air masses
