Civil Liberties
protect people from undue government interference or action
Civil Rights
Prevent Discrimination
1st amendment
Express ideas through speech and the press. To assemble or gather to protest. This prevents the government from creating/favoring a religion
2nd Amendment
Keep and bear arms
3rd Amendment
Prevents the government from forcing homeowners to allow soldiers to use their homes
4th amendment
Unreasonable search and seizure of an individual or private property
5th amendment
A person cannot be tried twice for the same offense, and property taken away without compensation. They cannot be imprisoned without due process of law.
6th Amendment =
right to a speedy and public trial, trial by an impartial jury in criminal cases, and to be informed of criminal charges
7th amendment
he right to a jury trial in Federal civil cases.
8th amendment
excessive bail and fines and cruel and unusual punishment.
9th Amendment
listing specific rights in the Constitution does not mean that people do not have other rights that have not been spelled out.
10th Amendment
The federal Government only has those powers delegated in the Constitution. If it isn’t listed, it belongs to the states or to the people.
