Chapter 4 Breathing Emergencies Flashcards
What is the pathway from the mouth and nose to lung is called???
The airway
What does the human body need a constant supply of??
Oxygen to survive
Once air reaches the lungs oxygen in the air is transferred to blood the heart pumps the blood throughout the body the blood flow through the blood vessels delivering Oxygen to the brain, heart and all other parts of the body true or false
True
What happens during in breathing emergency???
The oxygen supply to the body is greatly reduce whereas in the other the oxygen supply is cut off entirely as a result the heart soon stops beating and blood no longer move through the body with the oxygen brain could be going to die within 4 to 6 minutes
What’s the difference between respiratory distress in respiratory arrest
Respiratory distress is when someone has trouble breathing respiratory arrest is someone who completely stops breathing
What does the normal breathing sound like????
It is regular quite an effortless
Infants have periodic breathing so changes in breathing patterns is normal for infants. true or false
True
What causes respiratory distress and respiratory arrest
Choking illness chronic condition such as asthma Electrocution irregular heartbeat heart attack injury to the head or brain stem allergic reaction drug overdose poisoning emotional distress Drowning
What is Asthma
Is the inflammation of the air passage that results in a temporary narrowing of the airway that carry oxygen to the lungs
What triggers asthma
Exercise
cold air
Allergen
Asthma is the third ranking cause of hospitalization true or false
True
What does COPD stand for
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
What is COPD
Is a long-term lung disease encompassing both chronic bronchitis and emphysema COPD causes a person to have trouble breathing because of damage to the lungs in a person with COPD the airway becomes partly blocked and the air sacs in the lungs lose their ability to fill with air.
What are the common signals of COPD
Coughing up a large volume up tendency to tire easily loss of appetite bent poor posture fast pulse round barrel shaped chest confusion
What is emphysema
Emysema is a type of COPD it’s disease that involves damage to the air sacs in the lungs, this chronic disease worsen over time exhaling is extremely difficult
What is bronchitis
Bronchitis is inflammation of the main passage to the lungs it can be acute short lasting a chronic bronchitis is type of COPD to be like most diagnosed with bronchitis one person must have a cough with mucus on most days of the month for three months acute bronchitis not a type of COPD develops after person had a viral respiratory infection it first affects the nose sinus and throat and then spread to the lungs
What is hyperventilation
Hyperventilation occurs when a person breathing is faster and more shallow than normal when this happens the body does not take in enough oxygen to meet demand people who hyperventilating feel as if you cannot get enough air they usually hyperventilating happens because of anxious or confusion
What is an allergic reaction
Is response of the immune system to a foreign substance into the body
What are common allergens
Bee or insect venom antibiotics pollen animal dander surfa and some food such as nuts peanuts shellfish strawberry and coconut oil
What is the reaction to an allergic reaction
At first the reaction might appear to be a rash in the feeling of tightness in the chest in throat but this condition can become life-threatening the persons face neck ,tongue will swell and closing the airway
What is the Severe allergic reaction called
Anaphylaxis also known as anaphylaxis shock
What happens during in anaphylaxis
The air passage swell restrict persons breathing in anaphalyis can be brought on when a person with an allergy comes into contact with Allergen signals of amplexus including a rash tightness in the chest and throat is swelling of the face make in time the person also may feel dizzy or confused and anaphylaxis is a life-threatening emergency
What is croup
Croup is a harsh repetitive, the most common for children younger than five the airway constricts the the passage of the airway which causes a child to produce it unusual sound It can reach from a high pitch which sounds like barking, croup Mostly occurs during the evening and night time
What is epiglottis
It’s infection far less common than croup that causes swelling of the epiglottis, when it swells it can block the windpipe usually it’s caused by infection with haemophilus influenza bacteria
It’s common in children who are 2-6 yrs old
What are the symptoms of breathing emergencies
trouble breathing or no breathing slow or rapid breathing unusual deep or shallow breathing gasping for air wheezing gurgling or making high-pitched noise unusual moist or cool skin flushed to Skin or blushed skin shortness of breath dizziness lightheaded pain in the chest or tingling in the hands feet..... Appresive or fearful feelings
What to do until help arrives when someone is having breathing emergency
Help the person rest in a comfortable position usually sitting is more comfortable than laying down because breathing is easy in that position
If the person is conscious check for other condition
The person cannot talk ask them to nod
Bystanders are present ask questions
If the person is hyperventilating reassure the person
What is choking????
It’s when the airway is partially blocked but can be completely blocked also
What can’t a person do when they are choking ????
Cannot cough, speak, cry, or breathe at all
