Chapter 3 AED Flashcards
Which system of the heart sends out signals tells the heart to pump blood
The heart electrical system
What does AED stand for
Automated external defibrillator
What is the upper chamber of the heart called
The atria
What is the lower chamber of the heart called
The ventricles
Which chamber does the electrical systems’s signal pass through in the heart
The atria
How does the heart work when the heart is normal and healthy
The electrical signals cause the ventricles to squeeze together or contract These contraction force blood out of the heart the blood then circulates throughout the body.
What is ventricular fibrillation
When the heart fires at random at the heart stops pumping and stop breathing
What is ventricular tachycardia
It’s when the electrical stagnates tells the heart to quiver or contract to quickly
What are the AED precautions
Do not use alcohol to wipe the persons chest dry alcohol is flammable
Do not use AED pads on a child who is younger than eight years old or less than 55 pounds
Do not use pediatric pads on adults
Do not touch the person below the AED is Defibrillating the person
Do not touch the person while the AED is analyzing heart rhythm
Do not use aed around flammable stuff like gasoline materials
Do not use in AED in a moving vehicle
Do not use an AED on a person wearing a nitroglycerin patch or a medical
Do not use an AED around a phone it must be 6 feet away
How to use an AED on adult??
- Turn on AED
- Wipe the Bare chest Dry with a towel or gauze pad, this will make the pads stick
- Please one pad on the upper right chest and the other pad on the left side of the chest
- Plug the AED connector if necessary
- Let the AED analyze her/his heart rhythm or push the button marked analyze heart rhythm if indicated in prompt by the AED advice all responders and bystanders to stand clear no one should touch the person while the AED is analyzing because this could result in Faulty readings
- If the AED advice is that a shock is needed make sure that no one, including you is touching the person and say to everyone “stand clear” deliver the shock by pushing the shock button if necessary.
- After delivering the shock or no shock is advised perform about two minutes or five cycles of CPR continue to follow the prompts of the AED
Should you use AED around water????
No, if the person is in the water remove him or her from the water before defibrillation. a shock delivered in water could harm responder or bystander
What is a pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillators
Located in the area below the person left collarbone although they can placed anywhere it’s miniature. It automatically recognize and restores abnormal heart rhythm
Should you put on the AED pads right on top of the peacemaker
No, if it’s not visible it does not matter
What are transdermal medication patches
It automatically delivers medication through the skin A common medication patch is the nitroglycerin patch which is used by people with history of cardio problems
Should you put the AED pads are right on top of the medication patch???
No you should not you should remove them before you give AED shock
