chapter 4 acids and redox Flashcards
what is an acid?
released H+ ions in aqueous solution
What is a base?
compound that neutralises an acid to form a salt
what is an alkali?
type of base that dissolves in water to release OH- ions
What are metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates and ammonia classified as?
a base
what can titrations be used for?
finding the concentration of a solution, identification of unknown chemicals, finding the purity of a substance.
what is a standard solution?
solution of known concentration
what equipment is used for an acid base titration?
burette and pipette
what are the special cases for oxidation numbers?
H in metal hydrides is -1 (e.g. NaH), O in peroxides is -1 (e.g. H2O2), O bonded to F is +2(e.g. F2O)
What are the definitions of oxidation and reduction?
oxidation: loss of electrons/addition of oxygen/increase in oxidation number.
reduction: gain of electrons/removal of oxygen/decrease in oxidation number.
