Chapter 4 Flashcards
Periodic Trends of Elements
An ion with a negative charge
Anion
One-half the distance between the nuclei in the two adjacent atoms of the same element.
Atomic radius
In general: decrease across period; increase down group
An ion with a positive charge
Cation
A process in which the identity of matter changes
Chemical process
Half the distance between adjacent, identical nuclei in a molecule.
Covalent radius
The actual magnitude of positive charge that is “experienced” by an electron in the atom.
Effective nuclear charge
The energy released when an atom in the gas phase accepts an electron.
Electron affinity (EA)
Atom or molecule that has lost or gained one or more electrons giving it a positive or negative charge.
Ion
The radius of a cation or an anion
Ionic radius
The minimum energy required to remove an electron from an atom in the gas phase.
Ionization energy (IE)
Descrives two or more species with identical electron configurations.
Isoelectronic
A series of two or more species that have identical electron configurations but different nuclear charges.
Isoelectronic series
Elements in the s and p blocks of the periodic table
Main group elements
Half the distance between the nuclei of two adjacent identical metal atoms
Metallic radius
Elements with properties intermediate between metals and nonmetals
Metalloid
