Chapter 4 Flashcards
Product Data Management
Complex software systems that have an overview of many, if not all, aspects of production
PDM reduces mistakes, ensures all teams within the company work together, and allows for accurate costing and forecasting of production progress
CAD
Computer Aided Design - used to create precise 2D or 3D drawings, models, or technical illustrations
Commonly used by artists or engineers,
Advantages - is far more precise than by hand, can save labour costs, designs are easily saved
Disadvantages - complex to learn, software can be expensive, files can be corrupted
CNC Milling
Machines that work in 3D to drill and engrave intricate designs into objects
CNC Laser Cutting
Machines that cut at different speeds to cut through many different materials
CAM
Computer Aided Manufacturing - examples being CNC Milling and CNC Laser Cutting
Advantages - faster than traditional tools, more accurate than traditional tools, can run 24/7
Disadvantages- high set up costs, high training costs, complex to learn
Flexible Manufacturing System
A collection of automated machines that are adaptable, and are used in production lines where the product may change regularly
CNC Machines are typically used because they are easily reprogrammable, so changes are quick, simple, and cost-effective
