What are the parts of the hindbrain?
A
- Medulla Oblongata
- Pons
- Cerebellum

What is the medulla Oblongata responsible for?
A
- breathing, heart rate, vomiting, salivation, coughing, sneezing
- the respiratory centre sensitive to many drugs (e.g. Barbiturates, opiates, and alcohol)
- some drugs activate the vomiting centre to cause nausea and vomiting (eg opiates)

What is the cerebellum responsible for?
A
- initiation and co-ordination of body movements
- practised motor programs are stored here

What is the locus coeruleus?
A
Hind-brain nucleus, diffuse projections, NE, mood and arousal

What is the Periaqueductal Gray?
A
- central core of base of brain
- relays pain message to cortex
- rich in opiate receptors, one of the sites where opiates (e.g. Morphine) produce analgesia (relief from pain)
