Chapter 4 Flashcards
Chemosynthesis
When ATP is mad using chemicals as an energy source when no light is available
ATP
A molecule that transfers energy from the breakdown of food molecules to cell processes
Photosyntheis
The production of ATP by converting sunlight into energy through the chloroplasts if a cell
Producers
Obtain their energy through photosyntheis
Consumers
Obtain their energy by eating other organisms
Chloroplast
Organelle in plant cells that is responsible for the production of photosyntheis
Light dependent reactions
Capture energy form sunlight
Light independent
Use energy form light independent reactions
Photosyntheis equation
6C02 + 6H20 —-> c6H1206 + 602
Cellular respiration
Releases chemical energy from sugars and other carbon based molecules to make ATP
Formula: C6H12O6 + 602 —-> 6co2 + 6H20
Aerobic
A process that requires oxygen to occur
Example: cellular respiration
Anaerobic
A process that does not require oxygen to occur
Example: glycolysis
Fermentation
An anaerobic process by which ATPis produced by glycolysis
Photosynthesis
When light energy is converted to chemical energy and produces sugar and oxygen form carbon dioxide and water
Cellular respiration
Produces ATP by breaking down carbon based molecules when oxygen is present
Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell
