Assessment
The process of evaluating an individuals mental, emotional, and behavioral functioning through various methods
Classification System
A standardized method used to categorize mental disorders
- DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)
- ICD (International Classification of Diseases)
Clinical Test
A structured evaluation tool used to assess psychological functioning, personality, or cognitive abilities
Clinical Observation
The process of monitoring an individuals behavior, emotions, and interactions to assess psychological well-being
Diagnosis
The identification and labeling of a mental disorder based on a standardized classification systems and clinical criteria
Mental Status Exam
A structured assessment used by clinicians to evaluate an individuals cognitive, emotional, and psychological functioning
Neuroimaging Techniques
Methods such as MRI, CT scans, and PET scans used to visualize brain structure and activity
Neurological Test
A test designed to measure brain function and detect neurological impairments

Neuropsychological Test
An assessment used to evaluate cognitive functions, including memory, problem-solving, and language skills
Personality Inventory
A self-report questionnaire designed to assess personality traits and psychological functioning

Projective Test
A psychological test that aims to uncover unconscious thoughts and emotions
- Rorschach Inkblot Test
- TAT (Thematic Apperception Test)
Reliability
The consistency and stability of a psychological test or measurement over time
- Test-Retest Reliability: yields same result every time it is given to same people
- Integrated Reliability: different judges agree on how to score + interpret
Response Inventories
Self-report questionnaires used to assess specific aspects of an individuals thoughts, emotions, or behaviors
Standardization
The process of establishing norms and uniform procedures for administering and scoring psychological assessments
Syndrome
A collection of symptoms that occur together and characterize a specific mental disorder based
Validity
The extent to which a psychological test accurately measures what is is intended to measure
- Face Validity: test looks like it will measure what its supposed to
- Concurrent Validity: does the test correlated w/ a measure that has been previously validated
Categorical Information
The name of the category indicated by the clients symptoms
Dimensional Information
A rating of how severe a clients symptoms are and how dysfunctional the client is across various dimensions of personality
