Colonial Society
Consumer Revolution
- Caused by increasing prosperity in British colonies (from sugar)
- Different commodities across different political territories led to new means of exchanges (paper notes, system of credit) = central in prosperity/development of capitalism
- Purchased luxary items made by specialized artisans/manufactures, items shifting to common goods due to economic prosperity
Gullah and Geechee
- Carolina cultures cultivating rice
- Syncretic languages
- Retained many African practices (termanology) and basket weaving
Stono Rebellion
- A resistance to slavery occuring in 1739 in South Carolina
- Dealt with by militia violence and tighter control of slave life
Great Awakening
A religious movement in the mid 18th century of popular revivals and mass-yet individualistic-performances, united British Protestant churches
- caused by rising critique of consumerism, protestant roots, and culture of individualism
- provided language of individualism, reinforced print culture, supported independence
- Contributed to an individualist and anti-hierarchial style of religion
Seven Years War / French and Indian War (IN AMERICA)
Constant conflict between England and France developed in 1754 fighting in colonies and in Europe
- Contributed to a feeling of the colonies as a single unit, separate from England
- Caused when British colonists and Native’s killed a French diplomat over a fued of boundaries
- Ended with peace treaties of Paris and Hubertusburg in 1763 -> Britain gaining control of former French territory
Made British regulate and tax colonies more closely
Pontiac’s War
Caused by Ottawa leader inspiried by a religious revival, Pontiac crafting an alliance of indigenous groups to fight to remove European people from the Americas
- supported materially by French, sucessfully attacked Brits for 3 years, disease/lack of supplies = downfall
- altered the British government policy
Made British regulate and tax colonies more closely
Royal Proclamation of 1763
Created the proclamation line marking the Appalachian Mountains as the boundary between British colonies and land held controlled by the Natives
- Made to regulate and tax the colonies more closely = royal protection of Native’s and regulation of Anglo-American trade activity in territory controlled by the Natives
