Combining Form
A word root combined with a vowel
Combining Vowel
A vowel (“o” is the most common, followed by “i”) that is added between two word roots or a word root and a suffix to make pronunciation easier.
“Do Not Use” list
TJC created a list of dangerous abbreviations, symbols, and acronyms to help reduce the number of medical errors related to incorrect interpretation of Terminology.
Prefix
A word element that comes before a word root (pre means “before”, fix means “to fasten”); modifying the meaning of the word root by adding information such as presence, absence, location, number, or size making the word more specific.
Suffix
A word ending (suf means “beneath,” or in this case “behind”; fix means to “fasten”); following a word root and either changes or adds to the meaning of the word root.
Unique Plural Endings
Plural forms of medical terms that follow the rules of the Greek or Latin languages from which they originated.
Word Root
(Sometimes called a word stem) is the subject of a medical term and the foundation upon which the term is built.
