Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is epithelial tissue?
covers exposed surfaces, lines internal passageways and chambers, and forms glands
What is connective tissue?
fills internal spaces, provides structural support for other tissues, transports materials within the body stores energy
What is muscle tissue?
specialized for contraction and includes the skeletal muscles of the body, the muscle of the heart, and the muscular walls of hollow organs
What is nervous tissue?
carries information from one part of the body to the other in the form of electrical impulses
What are the functions of epithelial tissue?
Provide physical protection
control permeability
provide sensation
produce specialized secretions
What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue?
polarity
cellularity (bound close together)
attachment (basement membrane)
avascularity (lack blood vessels)
regeneration (replaced through cell division)
What is a cell junction?
specialized areas of the plasma membrane that attach a cell to another cell
What is a gap junction?
two cells are held together by two embedded interlocking transmembrane proteins
What is the significance of a gap junction?
rapid intercellular communication
What is a tight junction?
the lipid portions of the 2 plasma membranes are tightly bound together by interlocking membrane proteins
What is the significance of a tight junction?
prevent water and solutes from passing between cells
What is a desmosome?
CAMs and proteoglycans link the opposing plasma membranes
What is the significance of a desmosome?
The most durable connections
