Chapter 3.4 Catalysts and enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
Large protein molecules (biological catalysts). The RATE of chemical reactions are cause by enzymes
What is vital to an enzymes function?
Its shape
A catalyst SPEEDS UP/SLOWS DOWN a chemical reaction but isnt ______________in the chemical reaction.
speeds up
used
What is the active sight?
The area where the substrate fits into the enzyme
What is the Lock and Key theory
The substrate of the reaction to be catalysed fits into the active site
What is a catalyst?
special chemicals that speed up reactions
Enzymes control the metabolism.
What does this mean
The sum of all the reactions in the body
Name three examples of the types of reactions that are catalysed by enzymes?
1 Build large molecules from small ones eg. lipids from fatty acid, protein from amino acids
2 change one molecule into another
3 breaking down large molecules into small ones eg. breaking down carbohydrates, protein and lipid into their molecules during digestion
Enzymes can (2 things)
join small molecules together
AND
break up large ones
