Chapter 3 - The Human Digestive System Flashcards
How long is the human digestive system?
6 to 9 metres long
What is the food you eat made up of?
large insoluble molecules
What happens to the large insoluble food molecules that you eat food
They need to be broken down or digested so they can be absorbed by cells

What do glands such as the pancreas and salivary glands do to aid digestion?
they make and release digestive juices containing enzymes to break down your food
What are the main organs where food is digested?
stomach and small intestines
What happens in the small intestines
The place where the soluble food molecules are broken down into smaller ones and absorbed into your blood
How is the small intestine adapted to increase diffusion and active transport from the small intestine to the blood?
- large surface area
- covered in villi
- good blood supply and short diffusion distances to the blood vessels
What does the large intestine do?
absorbs water from undigested food
What does your liver do?
Produces bile (which helps in the digestion of liquids)
