St John asks Jane to marry him
What does St John ask Jane?
“Jane, come with me to India… God and nature intended you for a missionary’s wife… You shall be mine: I claim you.”
Why does St John want to marry Jane?
“You are docile, diligent… faithful, constant… your assistance will be invaluable to me”
Why does Jane want to say no?
“If I join St John, I abandon half myself: If I go to India, I go to premature death”
“He prizes me as a soldier would a good weapon, and that is all.”
Why does St John want a wife?
“I want a wife: the sole helpmeet I can influence efficiently in life, and retain absolutely till death.”
What does Jane say in the end and how does he react?
“I repeat I freely consent to go with you as your fellow-missionary, but not as your wife; I cannot marry you, and become part of you”
He says about how they could be unwed among “savage tribes” and sometimes in “solitudes” yet “take that space of time to reconsider my offer; and do not forget that if you reject it, it is not me you deny, but God.”
