Who is Adele the daughter of and what did Rochester do for her?

What did Celine Varens do to Adele and how does Rochester view Adele?
“she abandoned her child and ran away to Italy… I acknowledged no natural claim on Adele’s part to be supported by me… for I am not her father” “It is the illegitimate offspring of a French-opera girl”
How does Jane view Rochester at this point?
“his presence in a room was more cheering than the brightest fire… he was proud, sardonic… moody too”
What does Jane hear?
