Chapter 3.3 The Nitrogen Cycle And The Phosphorus Cycle Flashcards
A cycle if matter in which nitrogen atoms move from nitrogen gas in the atmosphere, to inorganic forms in the soil, to organic forms in living things, and then back to inorganic forms in the soil and nitrogen in the atmosphere.
Nitrogen Cycle.
Two processes in which atmospheric or dissolved nitrogen is converted into nitrate ions.
Nitrogen Fixation.
The process in which nitrates are converted to nitrates and then to nitrogen gas.
Denitrification.
A material used to restore nutrients to plants
Fertilizer.
The cycling of phosphorus between the biotic and abiotic components of the environment; consists of a biological and geochemical cycle.
Phosphorus Cycle.
A chemical that is essential to living things.
