Chapter 3.3 Fertilisers Flashcards
The three main nutrients that plants require to grow well are
nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
Ammonia (NH3) can be used as a fertilizer and also be used to make
fertilizers
The Haber process produces ammonia by combining
nitrogen and hydrogen
In the Haber process, elements are converted into ammonia by passing them over an
iron catalyst are a temperature of 400 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 200 atmospheres
The Ostwald process involves passing
ammonia and air over a platinum catalyst at 800 degrees Celsius
In the Ostwald process the nitrogen monoxide produced combines with
oxygen to from nitrogen dioxide which is converted into nitric acid by dissolving in water.
Percentage composition calculations:
percentage composition = mass of element x 100
