Chapter 1.7 Acids and Bases Flashcards
The pH scale is a measure of the concentration of
hydrogen ions
A pH below 7 is
Acidic
A pH above 7 is
Alkaline
pH 7 is
neutral
Acidic solutions have a higher concentration of
H+ ions (hydrogen)
All acids contain ions and as a result
conduct electricity because the ions are free to carry the charge
When an acid is diluted with water the concentration of H+ ions is
decreased. So the pH moves towards 7.
Alkaline solutions have a higher concentration of
OH- (hydroxide ions).
Alkalis contain ions and as a result
conduct electricity
Acids and alkalis are formed by
dissolving different oxides in water.
Soluble non-metal oxides produce
acids
Soluble metal oxides (bases) produce
alkalis
Neutralization reactions produce
a salt and water
The salt in this reaction would be:
hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide——–> ________ + H2O
Sodium Chloride
Spectator ions are ions that are
present during the reaction but remain unchanged by the reaction
