Chapter 32 - Chemical Equations Flashcards
What are the chemical formulas for these covalent compounds: Hydrogen Chloride, Water, Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Hydrogen Peroxide?
Hydrogen Chloride: HCl Water: H2O Methane: CH4 Carbon Dioxide: CO2 Hydrogen Peroxide: H2O2
What are the chemical formulas for these ionic compounds: Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Oxide, Calcium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide, Zinc Chloride?
Sodium Chloride: NaCl Magnesium Oxide: MgO Calcium Chloride: CaCl2 Calcium Carbonate: CaCO2 Sodium Hydroxide: NaOH Calcium Hydroxide: Ca(OH)2 Zinc Chloride: ZnCl2
What are the reactants?
The chemicals that react together in the chemical reaction. These are always written on the left-hand side of the equation.
What are the products?
The result of the reaction between the reactants. The products are always written on the right-hand side of the equation.
What is a balanced equation?
A balanced equation is one in which the total number of atoms in each element on the left-hand side of the equation is equal to the total number of atoms on the right-hand side of the equation.
What is a chemical formula?
A chemical formula is a set of symbols and numbers. The symbols tell us what elements are present in the compound. The numbers tell us the number of atoms of each element present.
