Chapter 20 - Materials Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that occupies space and has a mass.
Describe the properties of a solid (3)
- Definite Shape (unless heated or changed by a force)
- Definite Volume (almost incompressible)
- Do not Flow (over a surface)
Describe the properties of a liquid (3)
- No Definite Shape (adapt to the container)
- Definite Volume (almost incompressible)
- Flow and Evaporate (spread over a surface and change to vapour)
Describe the properties of gasses (3)
- No Definite Shape (take up shape of container)
- No Definite Volume (spread in all directions - diffusion)
- Easily Compressed (can be compressed into a smaller volume)
Describe the particles of a solid (3)
- Arranged in a regular way (cannot move)
- Packed closely together (cannot flow)
- Strong forces between particles (hold together)
Describe the particles of a liquid (3)
- No regular arrangement (no shape of its own)
- Slide over each other (can flow)
- Weaker forces (more freedom of movement)
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles to spread out and fill all available space.
Gasses: Quickly
Liquids and Solids: Slower
What is the melting point?
The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
What is evaporation?
The changing of a liquid to a gas
What is the boiling point?
The temperature at which a a liquid changes to a gas throughout the liquid.
What is condensation?
The changing of a gas to a liquid
Describe the particles of a gas (3)
- Arranged much farther apart
- Move quickly into all available space
- Weak forces between particles
