Chapter 30: Digestive & Excretory System Flashcards
What is mechanical digestion?
physical breakdown of large pieces of food into smaller pieces
What is chemical digestion?
enzyme break down food into small molecules the body can use
What is absorption?
when food is taken up into the bloodstream and used by cells
What is ingestion?
process of putting something into the mouth
What is elimination?
elimination of substances that can’t be digested or absorbed
What is the function of salivary analase?
break down starches into disaccharides
What is the esophagus?
tube leading to stomach
What is the stomach?
muscular sac that continues digestion
What is the function of the small intestine?
where most of the digestion and absorption occurs
What is the function of the large intestine?
remove water from material
What is the villi?
finger-like projections responsible for absorption
What is excretion?
process in which waste is eliminated to maintain homeostasis
What is skin excretion?
excretes excess water, salts, and urea
What is lung excretion?
excretes carbon dioxide from the body by exhaling
What is liver excretion?
breaks down nitrogen waste and unclamps fats into manageable droplets
