Asepsis
means that a surface is without pathogenic microorganisms
Bio hazard symbol
symbol used to mark bags or containers that hold items that are of bio hazard nature
carcinogenic
anything capable of causing cancer
cirrhosis
chronic liver disease characterized by scarring and ineffective function
disinfection
the application of a substance to materials and surfaces to destroy pathogens
health-care associated infection
an infection contracted by an individual at ahealth-care facility. individual did not come into contact with any other way
Material safety data sheet (msds)
required by law. contains essential information about chemicals and contact information for manufacture.
medical asepsis
state of cleanliness and disinfection that has reduces the number of microorganisms and pathogens to a significant degree
normal flora
resident bacteria normally present in specific areas of the body. This bacteria is not pathogenic
Nosocomial infection
infection contracted in a hospital or other inpatient care facility
percutaneous
through the skin
Personal protective equipment
equipment that is worn as protection for the employees
post-exposure prophylaxis
protection measures taken immediately after exposure to a chemical or other type of hazard. May include medication

same as bio hazard waste contaminated items
standard precautions
guidelines developed by the CDC to assist with the spread of infectious disease in health-care facility’s
vector
a carrier of pathogenic microorganisms. The vector is usually unaffected by the pathogen that it carries, but it is able to transmit it to a susceptible individual
