Chapter 1 vocab Flashcards
Asymptomatic
Without symptoms or outward signs of disease
CLIA-Waived
laboratory test that have been determined by the FDA to fit this category. These test are very simple to perform.
Specimen Processing
all incoming specimen are sorted, accessioned into the computer system of the laboratory, and appropriately labeled for transport. Also prepare specimen for transport to reference library’s.
Hematology
Whole blood testing, which focuses on the formed element (the blood cells) in the blood. Coagulation testing is also performed in this department.
clinical chemistry
Testing performed on plasma or serum (the liquid portion of the blood) and includes analysis of the substances dissolved in the blood stream. Most test are automated, and many of the test are performed as panels or groups of tests.
Serology/immunohematology
testing that focuses primarily on the presence of antigens or antibody’s on cells or in the liquid portion of the blood. Blood typing may and antibody screens and cross-matched for transfusions may also be performed in this department.
Urinalysis
The physical appearance of urine is assessed and urine chemical and microscope analysis is performed
Microbiology/parasitology
Identification of pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic sensitivity testing
cytology
Examination of various specimens for abnormal cells, chromosomal studies, pap smears
Coagulation
Specimen testing for the presence of various clotting factors
Histology/ Pathology
Tissue samples examined for abnormal function and form
ICD-9 Code
to allow for reimbursement for the test ordered. It is a numeric indicator for the diagnosis or symptom associated with the laboratory test ordered
Laboratory directory
A reference document in which specimen requirements and other useful information might be found. It includes all the tests offered by a particular directory
Laboratory report
a document used to transmit laboratory results and references ranges
Laboratory requistion
A form used to order laboratory tests
Plasma
The liquid portion of the blood within the body. Term used to also describe the liquid portion of a specimen when it has been drawn into a tube containing anticoagulant
Point-of-care-testing
testing that is performed at the bedside table or chair-side of patient, with results available within mnutes
Quality control
Practices used in the laboratory ensure that the results for a given test are correct
Reference laboratory
private commercial laboratory that tests high volume of specimens, and often performs highly specialized test that are not available at a physicians office laboratory or hospital laboratory. The reference laboratory receives specimens from other laboratories, and hospital or physician office laboratories, not just from their general community. Specimens may be shipped from all over the country
reference ranges
The expected ranges for a specific population for an analyte. These ranges can vary by age, gender,or race. Ranges are established by each laboratory, based on testing method.
serum
the liquid portion of the blood without the various clotting factors. serum is taken from a blood specimen that has been allowed to clot before centrifugation
stat
