What are the 8 requirements needed in order for a vet Rx to be valid?
- Name, address, tel no , qualification + signature of prescriber.
If sch 2 or 3 CD, then need RCVS REG NO.
- Name. + address of owner.
- ID and species of the animal and its address
- Date. Rx are valid for six months. Rx for Schedule 2, 3 and 4 CDs are valid for 28 days.
- Name, quantity, dose and administration instructions of the required medicine.
- Any necessary warnings and if relevant the withdrawal period.
- Where appropriate, a statement highlighting that the medicine is prescribed under the veterinary Cascade.
- If the prescription is repeatable, the number of times it can be repeated.
For sch 2 or 3 CD what extra declaration should be added?
the item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of the veterinarian
How long are vet Rx retained for?
Veterinary prescriptions should be retained for five years and NOT submitted to the relevant NHS agency.
For VET CDs how many days worth of treatment is it good practice for?
28 days worth of treatment unless situations of long term ongoing treatment e.g. epilepsy.
For Human Rx what is the max quantity of Sch 2, 3 or 4 CDs prescribed?
Should not exceed 30 days.
If it exceeds prescriber should be able to justify qty
For Vet Rx which are sch 2 and 3 what should be included by prescriber?
RCVS reg number.
What type of vet medicine should be prescribed usually?
Veterinary medicine with a GB or UK marketing authorisation must be supplied where one exists + is clinically appropriate.
Is it legal to supply human meds against vet rx?
NO unless done by vet surgeon + should include the phrase ‘for administration under the Cascade’.
Describe vet cascade?
- Supply Vet med with GB/UK wide MA for species + condition indicated.
- If NOT possible - give vet med with Northern Ireland MA for species + condition indicated.
- If NOT possible either- give GB/UK/NI vet med for other species or condition.
- If not possible- then GB/NU/UK HUMAN medicine OR
Vet med authorised OUTSIDE uk considered.
5- Last resort- give extemp/special made medicine.
What is needed for products NOT authorised in GB or UK-wide/NI?
Special import certificate needed.
Is is lawful to sell or supply unauthorised vet meds e.g. human meds like GSL and P meds under vet cascade?
NO - not even vet surgeon can tell animal owner to purchase OTC human product for animal.
What are 4 legal requirements for pharmacists when selling NFA-VPS or POM-VPS?
Advise on using product safely.
Inform of warnings, CI on packaging.
Be satisfied that person intends to use med correctly.
Prescribe/supply min qty needed for treatment.
What is NFA-VPS?
No food animal - veterinarian, pharmacist, suitably qualified person
NO written RX needed.
Is physical presence of pharmacist needed for vet med supply?
YES
What are some requirements needed for vet med labels?
1.Name of the prescribing veterinary surgeon.
2.Name and address of the animal owner.
3.Name and address of the pharmacy
- ID and species of the animal
5.Date of supply
6.Expiry date of the product
7.The name or description of the product or its active ingredients and content quantity.
8.Dosage and administration instructions
9.If appropriate, special storage instructions
Any necessary warnings for the user (e.g. relating to administration, disposal, target species, etc).
- the words- for animal treatment only
- keep out of reach of children.
- Any applicable withdrawal period - time between when animal receives med + when it can be safely used for food.
