Chapter 3 - Tissues And Early Embryology Flashcards
What are the main types of tissues ?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Epithelium
Sheet of cells that cover a body surface or line a body cavity
Function : protection, sensory reception, secretion, absorption, and ion transport
Special Characteristic of Epithelia
- Cellularity : made of tightly bound cells with little to no ICF
- Avascular : contains no blood vessels
Microvilli
Increase epithelial surface area; may anchor sheets of mucus
Stereocilia
Very long microvilli that cannot move
Basal Lamina
Sheet of proteins, acts as a filter and regenerates epithelial cells
Simple cells
One layer of cells
Stratified
2 or more layers of cells
Exocrine
Release into ducts
- produce serous glands
- mucous glands
- mixed exocrine glands
Endocrine
- ductless glands released by Exocytosis
- hormones
Eccrine secretions
Packaged into secretory vesicles , released into Exocytosis
Apocrine secretions
Released during shedding of apical portion cell’s cytoplasm
Holocrine
- Destroys the gland cells
- the cell is packed and then bursts apart
