Chapter 3 - The Skeletal System Flashcards
Ossification
Bone developement begining after three months of life
Osteoclasts
They break down old or damaged bone for new bone formation
Osteoblasts
They help rebuid the bone
Periosteum
Tough fibrous tissue that forms the outermost covering of the bone
Compact bone
Dense hard and very strong bone that forms the protective outter later of the bones
Cortical bone
Compact bone
Spongy bone
Is porous, lighter and weaker than compact bone
Often where red bone marrow is located
Long bones
The ends of which have red bone marrow
Exampes, femur and humerus
Cancellous bone
Spongy bone
Medullary cavity
Central cavity located in the shaft of long bones where it is surrounded by compact bone
Medullary
Pertaining to the inner section
Endosteum
Tissue that lines the medullary cavity
Red bone marrow
Located within the spongy bone.
Hemopoietic tissue that manufactures red blood cells, hemoglobin, white blood cells, and thrombocytes
Homopoietic
Pertaining to the formation of blood cells
Yellow bone marrow
Functions as fat storage areas
Located in the medullary cavity of long bones
Red bone morrow is gradually replaced by yellow bone marrow after adolescence
Cartilage
Smooth rubbery blue-white connective tissue that acts as a shock absorber between bones
Articular cartilage
Covers the surface of bones where they come together to form joints
Articulate
Come together
Meniscus
Curved fibrous cartilage found in some joints
Diaphysis
Shaft of a long bone
Epishyses
Wide ends of long bones
Foramen
Opening in a bone through which blood vessels, nerves, and ligaments pass
Foramen magnum
Foramen of the occipital bone at the base of the skull
Process
Projection on the surface of a bone that serces as an attachement for a muscle or tendon
Mastoid process
Bony projection located on the temporal bone just behind the ears
Joints
Articulations, are places of union between two or more bones
Fibrous joints
- Consist of inflexible layers of dense connective tissue
- hold bones tightly together
Sutures
Fibrous joints in adults
Fontanelles
“Soft spots” present on the skull of a newborn
Considered a fiberous joint
