Chapter 3 The Cellular Level of Organization Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
It is selectively permeable barrier, allowing the passage of some things and not others.
Plasma membrane
The concentration of salt solutions in the blood and elsewhere.
Tonicity
Materials move into a cell in a vesicle formed from the plasma membrane
Endocytosis
Vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane, releasing their contents into the extracellular fluid.
Exocytosis
Reactions provide the building blocks for cell maintenance, structure, function, and growth.
Cytosol
The cell’s surface, moves fluids along a cell surface
Cilia
Sperm cell
Flagella
Help reduce worn out organelles
Ribosomes
Powerhouse of the cell.
Energy in the cell
Generate ATP
Contain own DNA
Mitochondria
External solution that has the same solute concentration and water concentration to body fluids. No net movement of water will take place.
Isotonic Solution
External solution that has a high solute concentration and low water concentration to body fluids. Net movement of water will be out of the body and into the solution.
Hypertonic Solution
Solution that has lower osmotic pressure than another solution.
Hypotonic Solution
Making of elements to form into a whole
Synthesis
