Chapter 3 Summery Questions Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the difference between primer foundations

A

Primers may be sealers or underbodies

Sealers block stains that might rise through the paint; underbodies conceal minor imperfections in the surface.

Alkyd primers are used where water would damage the surface, like iron, which would rust

Latex or acrylic primers are water-based

Latex primers ar emoe flexibel acrylic primers are harder

Q

How are primers different from paints?

A

Primers prepare the surface for paint and paint protects the surface

Q

Describe the different paint formulas, highlighting their differences

A

Epoxy paints are two-part
systems that are very durable against abrasion and staining.

Solvent-based alkyd formulas are
for surfaces that cannot be painted with water; they tend to dry more slowly to a smoother finish.

Plant based oils are used to produce modified alkyds that are emulsified water and oil.

Latex and
acrylic paint are water-based paints.

Q

How would you explain to your client why one contractor’s bid is higher than another’s?

A

I would compare the description of the work and the presswork and steps

I would look at the product to be provided and see if the quality of material was comparable

Q

What is skim coating? What are the benefits of it?

A

Applying a layer of “hot mud” to the entire wall
surface in a manner similar to spackling.

It provides a hard surface and better acoustical
separation because it is just slightly denser.

Q

What sustainability issues pertain to paint and painting?

A

Durability and a proper spec are the
starting points of a sustainable installation

Q

What are some alternative materials if you want lower toxicity and more sustainability than is typical?

A

Earth plasters, milk paint, and other traditional formulations used before the advent of
modern petroleum-based chemistry tend to be low toxicity.

Q

What are the different decorative faces used for wall coverings, and what are the differences in their performance?

A

Paper is easily printed but the face is not durable unless it is coated paper. Paper
may have a vinyl applied or a vinyl film adhered (which is the more durable of the two).

Fabric
can be laminated to a backing and applied to walls but care must be taken to protect the surface
from adhesive when the covering is applied.

Vinyl is a durable surface that is often specified to
protect the walls beneath it.

Wood and cork veneer are also popular faces for wallcovering. They may need to be protected with a clear coat if one has not already been applied.

Q

What backings are used, and what circumstances indicate the use of which wall covering?

A

Backings must be
paired with the face of the wallcovering.

A heavy vinyl face indicates a heavy drill backing.

If the
backing must be somewhat pliable to match the face, then an acrylic backing makes sense

Paper backings vary in thickness and surface quality

Non-woven backings are also somewhat
flexible.

Q

What is the distinction between custom wallcovering and custom colorways?

A

Custom wallcovering
is a unique pattern and color whereas custom colorways means that the patterns are available
in different (stock) colors.

16
Q

What is the difference between vinyl and vinyl-coated wallcovering?

A

Vinyl is a film of vinyl but

vinyl coating is a sprayed-on sealant that is not as durable.

17
Q

What are the two rating systems that pertain to wallcoverings, and what does each of the numbered ratings mean?

A

Class ratings pertain to both commercial and residential wallcoverings but type
ratings pertain to commercial only.

18
Q

What steps are necessary to estimate the quantity of wallcovering needed for purposes of budgeting?

A

The room should be measured and the number of strips required is determined, then
the length of each of the strips (full length or shorter because of the position of a window or
door) determines the number of rolls or yards required. There are formulas for determining
rollage but they are not as accurate as the strip method.

19
Q

What kind of prepwork prepares walls for wall covering?

A

The walls must be sized at the very least
and if there are any imperfections, they must be corrected.

If the walls are a little rough a lining
paper may be hung to bridge the coarse texture.

20
Q

When would you use an antimicrobial system? A biocide? Microvented vinyl?

A

Anti-microbial
systems should be used when an area must be very clean or when you anticipate that things
may grow (e.g., mold).

A biocide will actively kill microorganisms not just make an inhospitable
place to land so use them when you need to kill germs

Micro-vented wallcovering allows
moisture to move though a vinyl wallcovering so it will be less likely to grow mold.

21
Q

When would you use a strippable wallcovering? When would you use a peelable wallcovering?

A

Strippable can be dry-stripped from the
wall without using a steamer leaving trace adhesive on the wall that can be washed off with
water.

Peelable wallcovering will delaminate leaving a liner paper on the wall, which is a good
surface for another application of wallpaper but would have to be stripped if you intend to paint.

22
Q

What sustainability issues pertain to wallcovering?

A

If the wallcovering is vinyl, there may be

VOCs and it will be derived from petroleum, so it is not sustainable

23
Q

What characteristics can add to your price for a paint or wallpaper installation?

A

Increased labor and product costs if the
job is intricate, extensive, or difficult. Often there is a lot of prepwork required, that can drive the
cost up. Expensive materials will also cost more.

24
Q

When you are inspecting a completed job, what kinds of things will you look for?

A

Quality of the material
may be poor so the color crocks off or the print is not crisp

Quality of the work may not be good,
leaving bubbles or gaps between panels or mismatched pattern repeats.
