Chapter 3 States Of Matter Flashcards
Solid
Atoms are tightly packed and vibrate together.
Liquid
Atoms are tightly packed atoms that slide past each other.
Gas
Atoms are free and have their own spaces
Thermal energy
Total kinetic energy of an object
Evaporation
When a liquid changes to a gas. Molecules spread apart.
Sublimation
A solid changes directly to a gas. like dry ice.
Condensation
A gas changes directly to a liquid
Crystalline solid
A solid with an strict order of atoms and molecules
An example is salt.
Amorphous solid
Made of atoms and molecule that aren’t in any order.
An example is something stretchy.
Surface tension
The force that causes liquid to form round drops
Kinetic energy
Energy of motion
Heat
Makes the temperature of something to change.
Endothermic change
Energy is required during the change. And heat is added
Exothermic change
Energy is released during the change and heat is removed.
Fluid
A state of matter that is not a solid and the molecules can move freely like in a gas or a liquid.
Also, Releases pressure evenly in all directions.
