Chapter 3: Sensation & Perception Flashcards
What is perception?
The organization of sensory input into meaningful patterns
What is sensation?
The detection of stimuli
What is the sensory threshold?
“How much more” to detect a noticeable difference.
What is the absolute threshold?
The smallest amount of stimuli needed to detect a difference from zero.
What is habitation
Ignoring repetitive auditory information
What is sensory adaptation?
Sensory cells become less responsive, touch, taste, smell.
What prevents sensory adaptation in the eyes?
Microsaccades.
In regards to vision, what is the trichromatic theory?
Retina contains three kinds of cones, respond to blue, green and red light
The fact that our cones respond in opposite ways is the
Opponent process theory
What does depth perception require?
Two eyes, retinal disparity, and convergence
What are the important structures of the ear?
Hammer Anvil Stirrup Oval window Cochlea
What is the frequency theory?
The rate of vibration equals the perception of pitch
What is the place theory?
The location of the vibration in the cochlea equals the perception of pitch.
Our sense of smell is called…
Olfaction.
