Chapter 3- Research Flashcards
What is a case study?
An observation in which psychologists study an individual in great depth in order to attempt to reveal things true about all of us
What is a survey?
Another research method, one that looks at many cases in less depth (compared to case study)
False consensus effect?
The tendency to overestimate others’ agreement with us
Population (research)
The whole group you want to study
Random sample
A sample that fairly represents a population because each member has an equal chance of participating.
Naturalistic observation
Observing and recording behavior in naturally occurring situations without trying to manipulate and control the situation
Correlation?
Correlate: when surveys and naturalistic observations reveal that one trait or behavior accompanies another; the two correlate.
-how well either factor predicts each other
What rarely occurs in the real world? (In terms of correlation)
Perfect positive and negative correlations
Illusory correlations
A perceived, non existent correlation
