Chapter 3: Reactions Flashcards
What is a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction is a process where atoms are rearranged to make new substances with the atoms joined together in different ways
What are the substances you start with?
Reactants
What are the things you end with?
Products
What can you represent a reaction with?
A word equation
What is an example of a balanced symbol equation?
2Cu + O(squared) = 2CuO, the balanced symbol equation shows the formula of each substance in the reaction, how the atoms are rearranged and the relative number of atoms of each substance
What might you see if a chemical reaction is happening?
Flames or sparks, notice a smell, hear fizzing or banging, feel the temperature of the reaction mixture going up or down
What can you add to a reaction to make it faster?
A catalyst which is used to help the reaction along and not speed it up
What’s the difference between a chemical reaction and a physical reaction?
Chemical reactions are irreversible (usually) while physical reactions can be reversed
What is a type of endothermic reaction?
Thermal decomposition where the temperature of the surrounding decrease and the energy moves from the surroundings to the reaction mixture
What is a type of exothermic reaction?
Combustion, where the temperature of the surroundings increase and the energy is moved from the reaction mixture to the surroundings
What is conservation of mass?
When a chemical reaction happens atoms aren’t destroyed but they are made, the total mass of reactants are always the same as the total mass of the products
What is an example of a physical change
When water freezes it turns to ice so on so on
What are 3 different types of a reaction?
Decomposition, thermal decomposition, oxidation, combustion
