What is a professional?
A person who is an expert at his or her work.
What is professionalism?
A specific style of behavior in the workplace.
Explain values.
Social principals, goals, or standards held or accepted by an individual, a class, or society.
How do morals differ from values?
Morals - tell the difference between right and wrong.
Values - principles, standards, beliefs with respect to right and wrong behavior.
What is a code of conduct?
A set of conventional principles and expectations that are considered binding on any member of any person who is a member of a particular group.
What is unprofessionalism in the workplace?
Not conforming to the standards of a profession; against the accepted code of conduct of a profession.
When you don’t do or act the way you should.
Name the characteristics of a professional:
- Honest
- Skilled
- Courteous / polite
- Reliable
- Considerate / kind
- Dependable
- Cooperative
- Committed
How is professionalism judged?
- Unwritten rules
- Code of Conduct
- Culture
- Expectations and standards
- One’s personal values
Describe how you would project (show) a professional image as a chef:
- Comfortable, non-slip leather shoes that are polished, closed toe, kitchen safe
- Pants (trousers) that are hemmed and fit right (appropriately) sometimes with a belt
- Clean, ironed, double-breasted chef jacket/coat
- Clean, ironed apron
- Chef hat or skull cap
How are judged as a professional?
- Your communication (how you speak to people and listen)
- Your image (what people think of you when they see you)
- Your competence (how well you do your job)
- Your demeanor (your outward behavior)
- Your appearance (the way you look)
- Your behavior (how do you act?)
- Your attitude (do you think positively?)
Give examples of unprofessional behavior:
- Conduct that could be characterized as harassment or discrimination.
- Verbal threats of violence, retribution, or lawsuits
- Verbal outburst (I HATE THESE COOKIES!!!)
- Inappropriate physical touching or contact
- Arguing in front of customers and clients
- Physical actions that threaten others such as throwing or knocking down objects
- Insults, verbal comments, or criticism intended to belittle or berate others
Explain diversity in the workplace:
Refers to the great variety of people and their backgrounds, experiences, opinions, religions, ages, talents, and abilities.
Diversity = variety (many different kinds)
What are the benefits of working in a diverse workplace?
- Creates a more enjoyable and productive environment
- Attracts more customers (people like to eat there)
- Becomes an employer of choice (people like to work there)
What are prejudices?
Negative biases do feelings, towards people of a particular ethnicity or culture and are not based on fact
Explain the meaning of stereotype
Assumption that all members of a group fit the same pattern
