Chapter 3 Neurons Flashcards
Cells in the nervous system
Glial and Neurons
Neurons
The nerve cells that handle information processing
Mirror Neurons
They are activated when we perform an action and when we watch someone else perform that same action
Glial Cells (glia)
The other type of cell in the nervous system.
Provide support, nutritional benefits, other function and keeps neurons running smoothly
Cell body
Contains the nucleus
Directs the manufacture of substance that neuron needs for growth and maintenance
Dendrites
Treelike fibers projecting from the neuron, which receives info and guides it to the neurons cell body
Axon
Part of the neuron that carries info away from the cell body towards other cells
Myelin sheath
A layer of fat cells that encases and insulates most axons
Resting Potential
The stable, negative charge of inactive neuron
Action potential
The brief wave of positive electrical charge that sweeps down the axon
All of nothing principle
Once the electrical impulse reaches a certain level of intensity it fires and moves all the way down the axon without losing any intensity
Synapses
Tiny space between the neurons
Gaps between neurons are synaptic gaps
Neurotransmitter
Chemical substances that are stored in very tiny sacs within the terminal buttons and involved in carrying info across a synaptic gap to the next neuron
Neural Networks
network of nerve cells that integrate sensory input and motor output
what are neurons and what are their 3 parts
