Chapter 3 - MENSTRUAL CYCLE Flashcards
day 1-5
follicles start to develop, producing an egg and oestrogen
the old blood lining breaks down and is shed from the body
day 6-13
the follicles continue to grow and the eggs within the follicles continue to develop. oestrogen levels rise in the blood.
day 14!
an egg is released from the ovary: OVULATION
day 15-28
the empty follicle develops into a structure which produces a hormone called progrstorone and relases it into the blood. progesterone causes the blood lining to thicken even further
function of: OESTROGEN
produced in the first half of the menstrual cycle, it’s function is to build up a new lining in the womb/uterus. it is produced by the follicles in the ovary and is released into the blood which carries oestrogen to the uterus
function of PROGESTERONE
it is produced in the second half of the menstrual cyle qnd it’s function is to further thicken the lining of the womb in case the egg released at ovulation is fertilised and needs to implant
it is produced by the empty follicles in the ovary.
