Chapter 3 Lessons 1-2 Flashcards
Heredity
The passing of traits from parent to offspring.
Trait
A specific character trait that is passed from parent to offspring through its genes.
Genetics
The scientific study of heredity.
Fertilization
The process in sexual reproduction in which an egg cell and a sperm cell join to form a new cell.
Purebred
Offspring of many generations that has the same trait.
Gene
DNA that determines a trait and is passed from parent to offspring.
Allele
Different forms of a gene.
Dominant allele
An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present.
Recessive allele
Is hidden when the dominant allele is present.
Hybrid
Offspring of crossing that allele have 2 different traits.
Probability
A number that describes how likely it is that a particular event will occur.
Punnet square
A chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross.
Phenotype
Organisms appearance or visible traits.
Genotype
Genetic make up or allele combination.
Homozygous
Having two identical alleles for a specific gene.
