Chapter 2 Book 2- Lessons 1-3 Flashcards
Virus
A tiny non-living particle that enter and then reproduces inside a living cell
Host
An organism that provides a source of energy for a virus or an other organism
Parasite
An organism that lives in or on a host and causes it harm
Vaccine
A substance introduced in to the body to help produce chemicals that destroy specific viruses
Bacteria
Single felled organisms that lack a nucleus; prokaryotes
Cytoplasm
A region inside the cell membrane, it contains a gel like fluid that moves structures called ribosomes
Ribosomes
They are located in the cytoplasm are tiny structures called ribosomes, chemical factories where proteins are produced
Flagellum
Flagellum is a bacteria, a long, whip like structure that helps a cell to move
Cellular respiration
The process of breaking down food is called cellular respiration
Binary fission
One cell divides into two identical cells
Conjugation
During conjugation one bacterium transfers some of its genetic material into another bacterium through a thin, thread like bridge
Endospore
A small, rounded thick walled resting cell that forms inside a bacterial cell
Pasteurization
When food is heated to temperature high enough to kill most harmful bacteria with out making the food taste different
Decomposer
Organisms that break down large complex chemicals in dead organisms, in to small simple organisms, natures recyclers
Protist
Eukaryotes that can not be classified as animals, plants, or fungi, they are very diverse
Protozoans
Unicellular
Pseudopods
Temporary bulges of the cells
Contractile vacuole
A structure that collects and expels excess water from the cell
Cilia
Hair like protons beta with a wave like motion moving the organism, they sweep food into the organism
Algae
Autotrophs can be unicellular or multicellular and use pigments to capture the suns energy
Pigment
Chemicals that produce color
Spore
A tiny cell that is able to grow in to a new organism
