Males are most direct. Males don’t show much emotion. Females more emotive and verbal

- Meaning is in people, not in the words. Ferdinand Saussure linguist. Sign has 3 elements: signified (idea conveyed), signifier (word) and the whole thing which is he sign.
- Language shapes attitudes. Naming and Dr. fox at the conference
- Language reflects attitudes powerful vs powerless language. Most effective when you combine the two
- Power. Not top down. Fluidly unfolding and being gracious when we do have power

- Content - content hasn’t changed much in 60 years. Men: sport current events, music. Women: life, family, health, clothing and men.
- Reasons for communicating - Men: making conversation fun, to accomplish a job, solve problems. Women: empathy, social needs
- Conversational style
- Non-gender variables - social class and culture
