Perceiving the self:

A
  1. Self concept defined - a set of relatively stable perceptions that each of us holds about ourselves. Self esteem
  2. Communication and development of the self - reflected appraisal, the theory that a persons self-concept matches the way that person believes others regard them.
  3. Culture and self concept - notion of self is shaped by the culture in which we have been raised. Most Western cultures are highly individualistic whereas most Asian ones are more collective
  4. Self concept, personality, and communication
  5. Self-fulfilling prophecy - the expectation of the outcome makes the outcome more likely to happen. Teachers need to have high expectations. If you want to bring out the best in people, “give them a high expectation to live up to”.
