Chapter 3 key terms Flashcards
Geosphere
The solid part of the Earth Consisting of rock or soil and loose rocks on the earths surface.
Hydrosphere
Makes up up all of the water on or near Earth’s Surface.
Crust
Is composed almost entirely of light elements.
Mantle
Which is the layer beneath the crust makes up 68 percent of the mass of Earth.
Core
Which has a radius of approximately 3,400 km, is composed of the elements having the greatest density.
Lithosphere
Its the Earth’s outer layer.
Asthenosphere
Is a layer beneath the lithosphere.
Tectonic Plate
It glides across the underlying asthenosphere is much the same way a chunk of ice drifts across a pond.
Chemical
relating to chemistry, or the interactions of substances as studied in chemistry.
Weathering
the process of wearing or being worn by long exposure to the atmosphere.
Erosion
Transports the materials elsewhere.
Atmosphere
Is a mixture of gas that surrounds the Earth
Troposphere
It extends to about 18 km above Earth’s Surface.
Stratosphere
It separates from the troposphere by the tropopause shown in figure 2.3, extends from about 18 km to an altitude of about 50 km
Ozone
Is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms.
Radiation
Is the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves.
Conduction
Is the transfer of energy in the form of heat from a warmer object to a colder object when the object are placed in direct physical contact.
Convection
Is the transfers of energy that takes place when variations in temperature move the matter making up air.
Greenhouse effect
It’s the process in which greenhouse gases absorb and reradiate infrared radiation near the Earth.
Water Cycle
The continuos movement of water into the air, onto land, and then back to water sources.
Evaporation
Is the process by which liquid water is heated by the sun and then rises into the atmosphere as water vapor.
Condensation
Is the process of water vapor forms water droplets on dust particles.
Precipitation
They are larger droplets fall from clouds as rain in a process.
Salinity
Its ocean water with the concentration of all the dissolved salts it contains.
Fresh water
Is a little more than 3 percent of all the water on earth.
Biosphere
Is a narrow layer around Earth’s surface in which life can exist.
