chapter 3 key terms Flashcards
geosphere
Any spherical concentric parts that make up the Earth
hydrosphere
All the water that is on the Earth’s surface like oceans, lakes, even clouds above.
crust
Crust is the most outer shell of the Earth, we are on top of the crust but the crust protects the layers underneath.
mantle
The most solid part of the Earth’s interior, it separates the crust and the core
core
The inside of the Earth beyond all the layers, it is the most hot and dense center of our planet.
lithosphere
The solid outer part of the Earth that includes the brittle upper mantle of the crust, the more weaker parts.
asthenosphere
The denser weaker layer before the lithospheric mantle
tectonic plate
The plates that make of the Earth’s upper lithosphere, they were formed 3.5 billion years ago.
chemical
A substance that can have different reactions upon something.
weathering
The process of something fading away over time or worn out with atmosphereic exposure.
erosion
Something like rocks that fade away over time due to natural resources like wind, water, other rocks, etc…
atmosphere
The out most layer on Earth that protects us from toxic chemicals from the sun like UV rays, it maintains temperature and pressure also.
troposphere
The lowest region of the atmosphere and contains 75 percent of the Earth’s total mass.
stratosphere
The layer above 32 miles above the Earth’s surface above the troposphere.
ozone
The layer that contains the Earth’s most toxic gases like harmful rays from the sun and harmful chemicals.
radiation
Emissions of electromagnetic energy and electromagnetic waves.
conduction
Heat or electricity can be transported through a metallic substance.
convection
A movement in a fluid that can result in transfers in heat.
greenhouse effect
The sun’s warmth that is trapped under the Earth’s atmosphere and provides enough warm for us to live.
water cycle
The cycle of water that is believed that all water will end up in the Earth’s oceans.
evaporation
The process of liquid to turn into vapor.
condensation
Water that collects like droplets when enough humidity is involved after precipitation.
precipitation
A precipitating substance from a solution like rain or snow.
salinity
A degree being saline
fresh water
Water not from the sea but from clean lakes.
biosphere
Regions on Earth occupied by living organisms.
