Chapter 3: Intro To Quantitative Research Flashcards
What is a construct?
A link of concepts
What is a concept?
Abstract thinking to distinguish it from other elements
What is a variable?
Presented in research questions and hypotheses
What is operationalization?
Specifically how the variable is observed or measured
What is a directional hypothesis?
Precise statement indicating the nature and direction of the relationship/difference between variables
What is a nondirectional hypothesis?
States only that relationship/difference will occur
What is a null hypotheses?
states no relationship/difference exists between variables, statistical test performed on the null, assumed to be true until support for the research hypothesis is demonstrated
What is an independent variable?
Manipulation or variation of this variable is the cause of changing other variables, technically independent variable is the term reserved for experimental study
What are some different terms for independent variable?
antecedent variable, experimental variable, treatment variable, causal variable, predictor variable
What is a dependent variable?
The variable of primary interest, the research question/hypothesis describes, explains, or predicts changes in it, the variable that is influenced or changed by the independent variable
Other terms for dependent variable
Criterion variable, outcome variable
What is reliability?
Consistency in procedures and in reactions
What is validity?
Truth
