NOS
not otherwise specified, not enough details are given, multiple options for codes are available. “unspecified.”
Carryover line
used when an entry will not fit on a single line.
Category
a single three-digit code that describes a disease or a similarly related group of conditions.
Connecting words
subterms that denote a relationship between a main term or a subterm and an associated condition or etiology
Conventions
general rules for use in classification that must be followed for accurate coding
Etiology
cause or origin of a disease or condition
Main Term
term that identifies disease conditions or injuries, it is identified in bold print and set flush with the left margin of each column in the Alphabetic Index
Manifestation
symptom of a condition that is the result of a disease
Nonessential modifier
term that is enclosed in parentheses; its presence or absence does not affect code assignment
Section
consists of a group of three-character categories that represent diseases or conditions that are similar

a mandatory cross-reference that advises the coder to go to another main term
See also
cross-reference that instructs the coder about the possibility that there may be a better main term elsewhere in the Alphabetic Index
Subcategory
a fourth-character code that provides additional information or specificity
Subclassification
a fifth-character code that provides even greater specificity
