Chapter 3: Fiber-Optic Cables Flashcards
Which is faster, single-mode or multimode?
Single-mode.
Which can achieve greater distances, single-mode or multimode?
Single-mode, it can cover 120 km. versus multimode which covers only 1 km.
Which is cheaper single-mode or multimode?
Multimode.
What is a Straight Tip (ST) fiber connector?
A bayonet-type connector that locks into the socket with a half-twist.
What is a Subscriber Connector (SC)?
A push-pull connector with a key to prevent twisting in the socket.
What is a Local Connector (LC)?
A small form-factor connector similar to the SC connector but approximately half the size.
What is a Mechanical Transfer-Registered Jack (MT-RJ)?
A small form-factor connector with duplex cores that is similar in size to an RJ45 connector.
What does Ultra-Physical Contact (UPC) mean?
The fiber core is polished to a zero-degree (flat) surface.
What does Angled Physical Contact (APC) mean?
The fiber core is polished to an eight-degree angle so that reflected light is diverted to the cable cladding to reduce return loss.
