Nullification
A doctrine that a state can null and avoid federal law, which in the states position, violates the constitution.
Dual Federalism
The doctrine stating national government is supreme in their sphere, states are supreme in theirs, and spheres are to remain divided.
Police Power
State power to enact laws promoting health, safety, and morals.
Recall
Procedure where the public removes an elected official from office.
Grants in aid
Money given from the national government to the states
Categorical grants
Grants given by the national government for specific things, such as building an airport
Conditions of aid
Requirements from the national government to receive grants
Mandates
The terms by which a state must meet, regardless of funds.
Waiver
A decision by an administrative agency giving some other part permission to violate a law or rule that would otherwise apply to it
Federalism
Government authority shared by national and local government
